I’M BACK,
GUYS! AND WITH A VENGENCE! (I hope).
Here’s to
2016. The year of the new starts. As you may have noticed, I’ve changed my
logo/header. So that’s a fun new thing. And there will be other fun, new
things, too. Hopefully. I’m really hoping that now I’ll get back into the swing
of things and post (semi) regularly again! I’ve been missing my bookternet.
If you
follow me on twitter, you may have noticed that I participated in the Bout of
Books 15 readathon this week! I was a pretty quiet participant though. More on
the sidelines. I still needed that quiet, to-myself-ness that I had going on,
so I kept it up. So, this post will sort of kind of serve as a bit of a wrap up
for the readathon!
The first
book I read this past week was The Tsar
of Love and Techno by Anthony Marra. This is a collection of short stories
(though it really does feel like a novel!) that kind of revolve around a
Chechen painting and the hands it passes through or impacts. It’s a truly
amazing and poignant book about the lives of those touched by the painting
spanning different times and places, though mainly in Chechnya and Russia. I
absolutely adored it and cannot recommend it enough! I can easily see this
being one of my favourite reads of 2016. And it’s only January!

From there
I moved on to The Raven Boys by
Maggie Stiefvater. And oh my goodness. I want to marry that book. I totally
understand the hype. And I absolutely cannot wait to read the second book! I
ordered it from Chapters immediately.
However, I had to order it online because they don’t have hardcovers at my
local store and
Scholastic paperbacks are horrendous. HORRENDOUS.
Honestly. It’s like a trick to make you buy hardcovers. ANYWAY. The Raven Boys. I’m officially obsessed.
I also read
a few graphic novels/comics!
I read The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl vol 1 and
it’s hilarious. I love Doreen and Tippy Toe. I mean, she’s
half squirrel. She has a tail and
everything! She gets into such shenanigans. I can’t wait to read the next
volume!
Then I read
Giant Days vol 1. And oh. My. Goodness.
This is the best comic series. I’ve been waiting for the first volume to come
out since I read the first issue at BEA. I don’t often buy single issues so I
was waiting for the volume to come out! Then my book store took forever to
actually get it in! Now I have it and I read it and it’s AMAZING. The main
girls are so much fun. I love reading about female friendships.
Next I read Ms Marvel vol 4: Last Days. And, of course, it did not disappoint! Not only was Kamala being her awesome self, she teams up with Carol Danvers! Captain Marvel herself! I love both of these ladies to bits so it was a total dream come true to see them together :D I can't wait til the next volume comes out and I'm bummed that it's not until June.
Now I’m
reading an ARC of Unhooked by Lisa
Maxwell that Simon & Schuster Canada sent me (out February 2nd!). This is a YA Peter Pan
retelling. As of right now I’m only about 80 pages in and I’m enjoying it for
the most part!
I didn’t
really stick to my Instagram TBR, but that’s okay. Bout of Books is such a laid
back readathon. You should check out their website and participate next time!
All right, let's sum things up!
Books read: 6
Books finished: 5
Novels(/story collections) read & finished: 2

There you
