So, I don’t
know how many of you out there are Colleen Hoover fans, but I’m a pretty new
one. Last year I read three of her books and loved them all! There is always a
neat extra element added. One of these books in particular brought me some
pretty rad musical enjoyment (and some great slam poetry).
In Slammed, the main character’s favourite
band is The Avett Brothers. Every chapter begins with a quote from one of their
songs. I was immediately intrigued. I looked them up online and liked whatever
song it was by them that I listened to. At that time, that was it.
In the last
month or so, I got Apple Music. I thought, three-month free trial? Okay. Then I
went about adding basically every song ever written to my music queue
(hyperbole). Of course, The Avett Brothers were among those. For the last few
weeks, I have been listening to all their songs on repeat.
I don’t
even know what to say, guys. They are absolutely amazing. They have a
folk/rock/grass feel to them, the lyrics are beautiful, the sound is great…
They just sound so genuine and touching. I can’t even. I can totally understand
why Colleen Hoover would want to incorporate them in such a big way into one of
her books. And by golly, do I ever thank her for it!
For the
last several months, maybe even the last year, I hadn’t been listening to music
nearly as much as I used to. Every now and then a song would grab me, but other
than that I just listened to the radio when I was driving and that was it. I
forgot what it was like to have a song take hold of you so completely. To make
you feel like it was written for you. Like it’s speaking directing into your
heart. I seem to have forgotten that books aren’t the only things that can do
that :P

Hoover, I thank you. Through your book, Slammed,
you brought music back into my life and I love
it. And to you, The Avett Brothers, thank you for your incredible music. It means so much to me.

haven’t listened to The Avett Brothers before, get on the interwebs somewhere
and listen to them! They are BEYOND GREAT.
