I must say, writing this post is very bittersweet. Heavy on the bitter. I love summer and I’m really sad that it’s time for a “best of” post. That being said, I did read some really awesome books this summer and I’m excited to share them with you! I really could just add every book I read this summer, because I was on a pretty great streak of awesome books for a while. But these are the best of the best and I highly recommend all of them!
1) Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling
I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this book from Random House Canada a few weeks before publication. I obviously devoured it. You can check out my review here. Pick this one up right now, guys! Unless you haven’t read Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns). Get that one first. And get your head out of your butt because you obviously should have read that by now. :P
2) Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng.
I’m pretty sure everyone has heard at least one rave review of this book by now. It came out last year and no one had a bad thing to say about it! I snagged a paperback at BEA and got the amazing Ms. Ng’s signature! This book was haunting, beautifully written, and absolutely heartbreaking. If you haven’t read this one yet, you need to.
3) The Martian by Andy Weir
If you haven’t heard of this one yet, do you live under a rock or something?! Why haven’t you read all these books?! Anyway, this one has a film adaption coming out on October 2nd starring Matt Damon. And I’m croaking for it. I wish I had read the book closer to the movie date so I wouldn’t have to wait so dang long. This book is so much fun. Enough science to be frigging cool, but not so much that you're lost. And Mark Watney. What a guy. What a guy!
4) Deceptions by Kelley Armstrong
This is the third book in the amazing Cainsville series and I enjoyed every minute of this compulsively readable paranormal mystery. I was so happy to snag a copy of this from Random House Canada and have a review of it here. If you haven’t checked out this series yet, do it now! The first book is called Omens.
5) The Wicked + The Divine Vol. 2: Fandemonium
I frigging love this comic book series. I have been dying for this volume to come out, and now I am dying for the next one. I have heard pretty polarizing reviews about this series, but I am solidly in the totally in love camp. The artwork is beautiful, the story is inventive (if slow burn-y), and the characters are super fun.
6) You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) by Felicia Day
This memoir is as quirky, fun, geeky, and beautiful as the lady who wrote it. It tells about her childhood, her anxiety, her addiction to World of Warcraft, the creation of The Guild, and her now successful career. Mad respect for this chick! She and Mindy Kaling need to become my besties ASAP!
7) Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
I listened to the audiobook of this one and I loved it so much! It was narrated by Wil Wheaton (perfect choice, by the way) and was just the most fun. This is another one of those books that pretty much everyone has heard about. If you love geeky junk, this book is going to be like crack for you.
So there you have it! My top 7! And yes, that number is totally arbitrary. It’s just the amount of super awesome books I read.
Have you read any of these? What are the best books you read this summer?
